Short Bio

Muhammad Shahid Farid obtained the B.S., M.Sc., and M.Phil. degrees with distinction in Computer Science from the University of the Punjab, Lahore. He worked as a Software Engineer for a short time before joining Punjab University College of Information Technology (PUCIT), Lahore as a Lecturer of Computer Science in 2008. Dr. Farid obtained his Ph.D. degree from Dipartimento di Informatica, Università degli Studi di Torino, Torino, Italy in 2015. He was with the EIDOSLAB Research Group under the supervision of Prof. Marco Grangetto. In his Ph.D., he worked on 3D television technology, particularly on efficient representation & coding of multiview videos, novel view synthesis techniques, and quality assessment of 3D videos. His research interests also include image segmentation, image fusion, gait recognition, image composition, and image retrieval. He was a visiting researcher for a short term in 2017 at the Computer Science and Engineering Department, Qatar University, Doha, Qatar. Currently, Dr. Farid is an Associate Professor with the Department of Computer Science, Faculty of Computing & Information Technology, University of the Punjab, Lahore, Pakistan.

Dr. Farid has over 75 publications to his name, including 50 journal articles, 24 international peer-reviewed conference papers, and 2 international patents. He has won numerous research grants including two competitive and prestigious HEC NRPU research grants. He recently won another research grant worth more than 14 million PKR from the Punjab Agricultural Research Board (PARB), Pakistan, in collaboration with the Department of Soil Science. He is an Area Editor of the PLOS One and Mathematical Problems in Engineering journals, and Associate Editor of the IAES International Journal of Artificial Intelligence (IJ-AI). He is an active reviewer for numerous journals. He has been serving as an Area Chair for the prestigious ACM SIGMM and ACM IMX, and as a member of the Technical Program Committee for several international conferences. He also served as Session Chair at ICACS'24. He is an HEC Pakistan approved Ph.D. supervisor, and a member of IEEE and ACM.
